Degree Programs: Full-Time: M. Phil., Ph.D.
The Ph.D. program in architecture is oriented toward the training of scholars in the field of architectural history and theory. Its structure reflects a dual understanding of the scholar's role in the discipline at large: as a teacher and as a researcher making an original contribution to the field, with an emphasis on expanding and reinterpreting disciplinary knowledge in a broad intellectual context. Course requirements are designed to give entering students a solid foundation in architectural history and theory, with sufficient flexibility to allow the pursuit of individual research interests. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged. The program's focus is on architecture and modernity internationally, from the eighteenth century to the present. A wide range of research is supported through the varied expertise of the faculty and through strong relationships with other departments throughout the University.
Certificate in Comparative Literature and Society
The Institute for Comparative Literature and Society (ICLS) awards a certificate in Comparative Literature and Society. For more information, see the ICLS website.
In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit 1 transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a Statement of Academic Purpose and 3 letters of evaluation from academic sources. Eligibility for admission to the program is limited to students holding a Master of Architecture degree or a five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree plus a Master's degree (or equivalent) in the field of architectural history and theory. Under certain circumstances, students who hold a Master's degree or equivalent in another field are considered for admission.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the program director and/or other Ph.D. faculty to discuss their research interests.
