2014-2015 M.Phil. deadlines

Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation apply through their department or program in order to receive the Master of Philosophy degree. Applications for the M.Phil. can be filed at any point in the calendar year. Degrees are conferred three times during the academic year—in October, February, and May. Students who are only receiving an M.Phil. do not ordinarily participate in Convocation and Commencement ceremonies.

2014-2015 deadlines for the Intent form and for the Defense application

The Intent to Distribute and Defend form should be submitted to GSAS as soon as the doctoral candidate is able to reasonably provide the information required by the form.  This includes the anticipated distribution term and the anticipated month of defense.  This form must be submitted before any other defense paperwork is submitted by the department.  Typically, the intent form is submitted to GSAS a few months before the defense takes place.

If your circumstances change, and the information on your already-submitted intent form requires updating, you do not need to submit a new form.  Just send an email to dissertations@columbia.edu and we will update our database.

The Application for the Dissertation Defense form should be submitted to GSAS by the department or program office as soon as the five proposed examiners have been finalized.  This form must be reviewed and approved by GSAS before the defense may take place.  It is best practice to submit this form as soon as the five examiners are chosen, even if the defense has not yet been scheduled.  We must receive this form from the department or program office at least four weeks before a defense takes place.
