Information for Graduates

The information below offers an overview of what you will need to participate in the 2015 graduation ceremonies.

Ceremony Dates

Academic Regalia

In order to participate in the Convocation and Commencement ceremonies, all students must wear academic regalia (caps and gowns). Regalia may be obtained through the Columbia University Bookstore in Lerner Hall, 2922 Broadway, New York, NY 10027. For more information, see this announcement on the Bookstore website or call the Bookstore's Regalia Hotline at (212) 854-6145.

For those not in the NYC area, the bookstore will accept orders by mail or email, and will ship via UPS from April through the beginning of May. See the "Order Forms" section of this announcement.

Ph.D. students: Late fees will apply to regalia orders placed after TBD. The last day to order custom regalia with guaranteed delivery by Commencement is TBD.

M.A. students: Master's regalia may be purchased in the Columbia University Bookstore up until the day of the Master's Convocation Ceremony.

Military Honor Cords

Active-duty members or veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are invited to wear a red, white, and blue honor cord at the GSAS Convocation and University Commencement ceremonies in recognition of their service to our country. These cords will be provided by the University to any eligible graduate who requests one. To request a cord, please contact by May 1.

Name Cards

Graduates must fill out and bring their Name Cards to Convocation. Graduates present their Name Cards to the reader so their names can be announced as they cross the stage. Professional photographers who are photographing the students then use these Name Cards to correctly identify the student in each photograph.

Each student will receive a Name Card in the mail in March. For current students, Name Cards will be sent to the address on file in the "Local Address" section of the "Addresses: View and Update" page in SSOL; for October and February graduates, Name Cards will be sent to the same address they requested for the diploma mailing.

Following the graduation ceremonies, diplomas for May graduates will be mailed to the address on file in the "Diploma Address" section of the "Addresses: View and Update" page in SSOL. It will take several weeks to complete the mailing of all diplomas; consequently, please provide an address that will be valid for the duration of the summer. If no address is on file, your diploma will not be mailed out.

You may update your "Diploma Address" in SSOL until TBD; after that date, you may email with your updated address.
