Statistics Ph.D. Student Debunks Rat Myth

Jonathan Auerbach, a Ph.D. student in Statistics, received press coverage this week for debunking the myth of one rat for every person in New York City. In an article published in Significance magazine, Auerbach drew on rat complaint data from the city's 311 call logs to estimate a total of 2 million rats in the city, which is only a 1:4 ratio of rats to humans. Auerbach won the Significance Young Statisticians Writing Competition for his work.
