The Harriman Institute administers the Master of Arts in Regional Studies—Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe (MARS-REERS) for those wishing to focus on a multidisciplinary approach to the study of contemporary Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe (the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans).

The program provides intensive exposure to the politics, international relations, modern history, and cultural and social formations of the region, with both a country-specific and trans-regional focus. Applicants should have some prior language training and must complete at least three years of an Eastern European or a Eurasian language.

The program is tailored to meet the needs of persons entering professional careers, mid-career professionals, students preparing for entry into doctoral programs, and those with a professional degree, such as the JD or MBA, who want to gain regional expertise.

Special Admissions Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit one transcript showing courses and grades for each school attended, a statement of academic purpose, a writing sample (a course paper, term paper, etc.), a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation from academic sources.

All international students whose native language is not English or whose undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official language is not English must submit scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS.

*GSAS will accept up to four recommendations, regardless of the number required by your program of interest. However, to be eligible for admission at GSAS, at least TWO letters must be submitted by academic recommenders.
