Program Category: PhD Programs

Chair: Thomas Maniatis

Degree Programs: Full-Time: MPhil, PhD

Please note: This program is located on the Health Sciences campus in the College of Physicians and Surgeons. The degree for this program is conferred by GSAS, but program specifics, such as admissions, degree requirements, and financial aid, are administered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Researchers in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics use the full spectrum of contemporary biophysical, biochemical, molecular biological, and cellular techniques to study developmental biology; gene expression, regulation, and signal transduction; macromolecular structure, function, and dynamics; and molecular neurobiology.

Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include teaching assistantships and research apprenticeships.

Special Admissions Requirements:

Basic knowledge of biology, mathematics, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and physics is required. The GRE subject test in biochemistry, biology, cell and molecular biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics is optional.
