The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is proud to participate in the Provost’s Diversity Fellowship initiative, established in 2012 to enhance the diversity of Columbia’s PhD programs. Made possible by Columbia’s initial $30 million investment to enhance faculty and pipeline diversity, GSAS supplements the fellowship package by providing a one-time research stipend to selected incoming PhD students.
The fellowships are intended to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity in pathways to the professoriate by attenuating barriers to access for doctoral study at Columbia University, particularly for US citizens and permanent residents who have overcome systemic challenges or hardships in their academic pursuits and who have demonstrated a strong commitment to engaging diversity. Examples of such challenges or hardships might include experiences related to race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic background, family history of post-baccalaureate opportunity, gender identity and gender expression, disability, and military service. Examples of a demonstrable commitment to engaging diversity might include a particular research focus, a history of service, community engagement, and teaching and mentoring activities.
Admitted doctoral students will be invited to submit a diversity statement, which is required in order to be considered for this one-time award.
