Summer Stipends

As part of the multi-year funding package for continuing doctoral students in most Arts and Sciences programs (all Humanities, all Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics), the Graduate School provides annual summer research stipends. (Continuing students in the Natural Sciences receive instead research salaries or other support from their departments.)  In order to receive these funds, all students must be eligible for funding through their multi-year funding package promised at the time of admission (in almost all cases years 1-5), in good standing, and making satisfactory academic progress. Students should contact their DGS to determine what documentation their department requires before disbursal of the summer stipend. Students in doctoral programs outside of the Arts and Sciences should consult with their DGS regarding the availability of summer support.

Note: students in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Math, and Statistics in the following situations are not eligible to receive a summer stipend:

  1. Students who will not register in the upcoming fall term due to their withdrawal or termination from their program.
  2. Students who are owed a summer stipend but are on leave of absence for all or part of the spring semester OR file for a fall term leave of absence prior to May 1. GSAS will bank the stipend for a future summer after their return from leave.
  3. Students who deposit their dissertation in time for the May degree conferral deadline.
  4. Students beyond the 7th year of registration.

Students may receive only one GSAS summer stipend award per year. Students who are serving as preceptors in Literature Humanities or Contemporary Civilizations who are also eligible to receive a multi-year summer stipend may bank one of these two stipends for a future summer.

Upon request, students with significant academic-year external awards may bank the summer stipend owed to them through their multi-year GSAS fellowship package.

Since summer 2014, GSAS no longer imposes a cap on external summer funding. Students who receive an external fellowship that is awarded explicitly for the months of June, July, and August also receive their GSAS summer stipend.

Students who hold external need-based awards may receive a GSAS summer stipend as long as the additional funding does not reduce their academic year award(s).
